The intraglandular distribution of adrenergic and cholinergic nerve fibers was studied histochemically in the parotid, mandibular, and sublingual glands of six species of edentates belonging to the three families that comprise the order; namely, the Dasypodidae (armadillos), the Myrmecophagidae (anteaters), and the Bradipodidae (sloths). The following histochemical techniques were used: (a) acetylcholinesterase reaction for the demonstration of cholinergic fibers; (b) formaldehyde- and glyoxylic acid-induced fluorescence for the demonstration of adrenergic fibers. In addition, norepinephrine (NE) was assayed fluorimetrically in the mandibular and parotid glands of the armadillo. A network of acetylcholinesterase-positive nerve fibers surrounds the intra- and interlobular ducts and endpieces of all glands; it is of low density in the mandibular and sublingual gland of the sloth, of high density in the sublingual gland of the anteater and of moderate density in the remaining glands. A vascular cholinergic innervation occurs in all salivary glands. Although present around the vessels, adrenergic new fibers were virtually absent from the parenchyma of all glands, even after in vitro incubation of glandular tissue with NE, or after administration of NE to armadillos previously treated with a monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitor. Consistent with this fact, the amount of NE present in the parotid and mandibular gland of the armadillo was extremely low. These findings may indicate that the salivary secretion in the edentates is regulated by the parasympathetic rather than by the sympathetic nervous system.  相似文献

The physics of tightly packed structures of a wire and other threadlike materials confined in cavities has been explored in recent years in connection with crumpled systems and a number of topics ranging from applications to DNA packing in viral capsids and surgical interventions with catheter to analogies with the electron gas at finite temperature and with theories of two-dimensional quantum gravity. When a long piece of wire is injected into two-dimensional cavities, it bends and originates in the jammed limit a series of closed structures that we call loops. In this work we study the extraction of a crumpled tightly packed wire from a circular cavity aiming to remove loops individually. The size of each removed loop, the maximum value of the force needed to unpack each loop, and the total length of the extracted wire were measured and related to an exponential growth and a mean field model consistent with the literature of crumpled wires. Scaling laws for this process are reported and the relationship between the processes of packing and unpacking of wire is commented upon.  相似文献

The germicide capability of the macrophage (MØ) of the Antarctic fish Notothenia coriiceps is demonstrated using fluorescence microscopy for the first time. The MØs were able to kill microorganisms by intracellular mechanism and this killing can be stimulated by oyster-derived glycogen. Although the phagocytosis index is lower than in temperate water fish species, this work demonstrates that non-specific defence mechanism plays an important role in the polar environment. There are some studies on inflammation in N. coriiceps [Silva et al. (1998) Polar Biol 20:206–212], parasite–host relation [Silva et al. (1999) Polar Biol 22:417–424] and phagocytosis [Silva et al. (2002) J Fish Biol 60:466–478]. These previous studies have shown that the MØ were able to identify biotic and abiotic factors. However, it can be of interest to study the activity of MØ in microorganism killing, and this work adds new insights of this fundamental process under Antarctic temperatures.  相似文献

Molecular structure, spectroscopic and photophysical data for the singlet state of 3-benzyl-lumiflavin in different solvents are presented. Theoretical studies concerning singlet-singlet and triplet-triplet excitation energies were carried out using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations. These predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results, which reflect the solvent interactions. All the observable singlet-singlet transitions have pi-pi* character. The title compound appears to be an efficient sensitizer of the production of singlet oxygen (phi(Delta)= 0.53). The crystal structure of 3-benzyl-lumiflavin is also presented, along with its solid-state photophysical data.  相似文献

The fig (Ficus L.) infructescence, called syconium, is a receptacle with an apical opening, the ostiole, closed by bracts. The ostiolar bracts produce an exudate, which is rather conspicuous in some species. It has not been histochemically analyzed yet, and the structures responsible for its production are still unknown. Some wild growing species of Ficus from Brazil produce high amounts of this ostiolar exudate. Ficus enormis (Mart. ex Miq.) Miq. grows as trees or shrubs in the Atlantic rainforest. Our goal was to identify the secretory structures present in the inflorescence and, to characterize histochemically the ostiolar tissues and exudates. Syconia samples of F. enormis were processed and stained according to the usual techniques in plant anatomy. The morphological analysis revealed different types of bracts, one type specialized in secretion, another showing transitional characteristics between secretory and non-secreting bracts, and a third one being non-secreting. They are designated as secretory ostiolar bracts, transitional bracts and wall bracts. The floral bracteoles, digital-shaped colleters present in the ostiole, at the syconium axis and at the flower receptacle, were also analyzed. All have similar structure, like finger-shaped secretory trichomes. The colleters present among ostiolar bracts may contribute to production and composition of the ostiole exudate.  相似文献
